Rudi Pichler is firmly in the upper echelon of Wachau’s elite growers, crafting wines that consistently balance precision, power, and age worthiness. Based in the village of Wosendorf, the Pichler family has deep roots here, tending vines since 1731. When Rudolf Pichler III took the reins in 1997, he honored that legacy while pushing things forward, expanding vineyard holdings and completing a state of the art cellar in 2004. Today, the estate stands as a benchmark for what Wachau can deliver at the highest level, wines that speak clearly of site, season, and meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar.

The Gruner Veltliner Federspiel pulls fruit from multiple estate vineyards, harvested over a roughly two week window to capture a range of ripeness and site expression. On the nose, it opens with rich yeast tones layered over russet pear peel and a subtle white pepper spice. The palate is juicy and ripe, yet anchored by a distinctly stony core that keeps everything focused. There is a creamy texture here, but it is balanced by savory lift and a clean, mineral driven finish. As it opens, more complexity emerges, especially that classic Gruner pepper note, along with a quiet but unmistakable sense of power, impressive for a Federspiel. Bone dry and built with both immediate appeal and underlying structure, this is a beautifully composed snapshot of the vintage.
