Brothers Joan and Josep d'Anguera are masters of Catalonian Garnacha, and their Les Maiols bottling is one of the prettiest and most ethereal red wines we've tasted this year. From certified organic and biodynamic vineyards in Montsant, just south of Priorat, the brothers ferment with native yeasts in concrete. They also minimize fining, filtration, and sulfite additions.
The resulting wine is a complete mindbender. Quite pale in color, the appearance of the wine suggests it's going to be super light and washed out, but that's not the case at all. Grenache's full charm is on display here -- wonderful notes of warm cherry, strawberry, and raspberry mingle with more complex nuances of white pepper, rose petal, and mineral. Think Cotes du Rhone meets Cru Beaujolais meets Frappato.....
