Domaine de Colette is a prime example of why the wines of Beaujolais are better and more popular than ever. Located in the village of Regnie, less than a mile from the border of Morgon, this estate was founded in 1953. Today, husband and wife Jacky and Evelyne Gauthier run the estate and farm their old vines without any chemical sprays or fertilizers. Their vines are old, their yields are low, and they ferment and age in cement only (no oak). The result is a delicious mouthful of ripe, sappy and fresh Gamay, whose granite soils provide minerality and whose excellent exposure allows the burst of the Beaujolais fruit we know and love.

And for those who suffer from headaches and sneezing/sniffling when you drink red wines, Gamay is the answer. Many of my customers have determined that “large and in charge,” heavily oaked reds don’t leave them feeling so great. While wines of that sort can taste wonderful, they also tend to run high in grape and oak tannin and they possess higher alcohol levels. It’s this combination that causes headaches, sneezing, sniffling, and suffering. Trust me, IT’S NOT THE SULFITES! Long story short, Gamay tends to run low on the spectrum of tannin and/or new oak, and it’s the wine I always recommend to folks who complain about “wine headaches.”

For those who like more light to medium bodied, fresh and invigorating reds, you’ve got to try this one. It’s a bit like Pinot Noir, with its rich and ripe aromas and flavors of cherries, strawberries, and rose petal, but it’s a bit fuller-bodied. Still, the tannin here is fully ripe and rounded, and it is acidity that gives this wine its structure. One of the all time great reds to enjoy with a big charcuterie spread, it’s also fantastic with lighter fare like poultry and salmon.
