Ross Cobb is one of California’s true Pinot Noir masters. Raised among the vines at his family’s famed Coastlands Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, Cobb went on to refine his craft through extensive travels in Burgundy and through work with legendary estates like Williams-Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch. Even while helping shape wines at those iconic properties, he quietly built his own label into one of Sonoma Coast’s most respected artisanal Pinot Noir projects. Today, Cobb focuses entirely on his small-production wines, crafting soulful and site-driven Pinot Noirs that beautifully bridge Old World nuance and California purity.
The 2021 Doc’s Ranch Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard adjacent to Cobb’s Coastlands site, placing it firmly within one of the Sonoma Coast’s elite Pinot Noir zones. Comprised of Swan, Calera, and Pommard clones and fermented with 50% whole clusters, this is a deeply complex and beautifully layered Pinot Noir. Aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal, mint, white pepper, forest floor, and evergreen flow effortlessly from the glass. Medium-bodied yet intensely flavorful, it combines energetic red fruit, savory spice, and silky tannins with the freshness and structure to evolve gracefully for years to come.
Decanter - 97 points - "The Doc's Ranch is east-facing 1150-1200ft of elevation, and according to Cobb, it is pummeled with fog. The slope is southeast facing, and Ross uses 50% whole cluster to make this wine—aromas of red flowers and mint, white pepper and wild green strawberries. The palate shows sweet red berries, lightly spiced with notes of white pepper and an elegantly textured mouthfeel. This Pinot dances across the palate with zippy, savoury white pepper and a fresh note of evergreen sap and lithe pine needles lingering on through the finish."
Jeb Dunnuck - 96 points - "The ruby red 2021 Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch Vineyard boasts a fruitier and more floral nose, showing off notes of ripe strawberries, raspberries, rose petals, and herbes de Provence. The palate offers a haunting, delicate feel, with refined, ripe tannins, a mineral texture, and a graceful and weightless feel. It’s going to take time to open but will drink well over the next 12-15 years."
