Schirru 'Fastigiu' Rosso
Regular price $29.99Brothers Marco and Michele Schirru work on 4.5ha of Sardinian soil, which, taken care of by their paternal side of the family, have some vines dating back 100yrs or more. They work entirely organically, harvest by hand, and work entirely with endemic varietals. Their whites all see light maceration and stainless steel, and their reds see a mix of neutral barrel and stainless steel tanks. None of their wines are fined or filtered, and they add small amounts of SO2 as needed generally at racking or bottling, if at all.
Their 'Fastigiu' Rosso is a blend of 50% Bovalleddu, 25% Bovale Grande, and 25% Monica. 'Fastigiu' means 'Courtship' in Sardinian, and Schirru says themselves, "on one side, the delicate and soft shoulders of Monica; on the other, the robust, rustic, vigorous form of Bovale." It certainly succeeds. Elegant, fresh, and perfumed. Red fruits of cherry, red plum, and cranberry are joined by dried thyme, oregano, violets, and crushed stones in a wine that shows why the Schirru family continues making some of the most expressive wines in Sardinia.
