Petrolo is one of the great estates of Tuscany, doing exceptional work in the Valdarno di Sopra DOC since the 1940s. The Torrione is a Super Tuscan made primarily from Sangiovese, with a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a serious, age-worthy red from a producer with a long track record of making exceptional wine.
Drinking beautifully right now, Torrione shows ripe black cherry, wild berries, crushed violets, tobacco, cedar, and warm spice. The palate is plush and structured, with juicy plum, dark chocolate, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a long finish of graphite and dried herbs. Power and finesse in equal measure, and while it’s great now, it will develop beautifully over the next 7 to 10 years.
