Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon-Villages
In 1999, legendary Meursault producer Dominique Lafon became the first of the Cote d'Or region of Burgundy to begin a project in the Maconnais region, which is further south. A region known largely for producing more industrial amounts of wine in Burgundy, Dominique sought to show that the terroir was capable of producing world class wines. He converted the purchased land to biodynamics and got to work. It is no surprise that the project has received world renown and is known for producing some of the best wines in Maconnais, rivaling (and in some cases perhaps even surpassing) those options found in the more highly regarded Cote d'Or.
His Macon-Villages bottling is the perfect entry point for what more intentionally produced Maconnais wines can do. Chiseled, mineral-driven, and flowing with notes of green apple, pear, nectarine, Meyer Lemon, and pomelo fruits. Elderflower florals abound, and a struck match character along with stony minerality really raise eyebrows when one sees that this wine still carries the humble Macon-Villages appellation, which is exactly Dominique's point.
