Fairly new on the scene, but making big waves, Lectores Vini has produced one of the great Priorat values in the world. DJ-turned winemaker Fredi Torres works with old, organic vines situated on the steep, terraced, slate-soiled vineyards of Priorat, just a bit southwest of Barcelona.
His 2021 Priorat Classic is a traditional blend of 70% Garnatxa, 25% Carinena, and 5% "other local grapes." It sees 12 months of aging in older, seasoned French oak barrels, and the finished wine is exceptional. Of the 100+ Priorats that Vinous Media reviewed in the 2021 vintage, this was one of just two to score above 93 points and retail for less than $30.
"This garnet-red wine offers aromas of cherry and pomegranate, complemented by notes of mint, rosemary, cigar, and undergrowth. Dry, juicy and taut on the palate, its finely textured mouthfeel leads to a compact finish. This is serious Priorat. Drink 2025 - 2036." Vinous Media, 94 points
