The village of Cairanne is located north of Chateauneuf du Pape, and Domaine les Grands Bois is one of the village's superstars. I have long been a fan of the estate's various cuvees, but their Cuvee Max, as it has come to be called, has always been a personal favorite of mine.
A blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah from 50+ year-old, organically farmed vineyards, this could definitely hold its own in a blind tasting of much more expensive Southern Rhones. Rated 94 points by Jeb Dunnuck, who has a very perceptive "Rhone palate," I snatched up my supplier's last 10 cases.
