The Aligote grape often produces bland and forgettable white wines, but when it's done right, it can yield super refreshing and thirst-quenching wines. Francois Berthenet and his dad Jean-Pierre own a tiny patch of Aligote that was planted back in 1950. It's these old vines that make this wine so good.
When I popped and poured this, I was not expecting much, but I misjudged this one badly. As a staff, we all kind of flipped over this one. It kind of smells like a lighter Macon Villages or a more restrained Sauvignon Blanc. Zippy notes of green apple, lemon, and wet rock lead into a lively palate of citrus, green herb, and mineral. It's not a grand wine or one that is going to inspire hours of contemplation, but it is one that goes down easily and one that puts a smile on my face. - JS
