Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva 'Caparsino'

Produced by Paolo Cianferoni at his organically farmed estate in Radda in Chianti, this is pure, old-school Sangiovese from one of the highest and coolest sectors of the appellation. Paolo's family has owned the property since 1965, and he has spent decades refining his vision while remaining firmly committed to organic farming, low yields, and traditional élevage in large oak casks. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of place, vintage, and variety rather than cellar tricks or winemaking fashion.

In the glass, Caparsino delivers everything I want from serious Chianti Classico Riserva. Aromas of red and black cherry, violet, dried herbs, forest floor, leather, and crushed stone lead into a palate that is energetic, structured, and remarkably transparent. There is plenty of depth here, but what really sets this wine apart is its balance and freshness. The tannins are firm but refined, and the wine finishes with the savory, mineral-laced character that is the calling card of great Radda Sangiovese. This is a fantastic match for bistecca Fiorentina, mushroom risotto, or a simple bowl of pappardelle with wild boar ragù, but it's also a wine that rewards patient cellaring for a decade or more.
