Bodegas Muga is one of Rioja's blue-chip estates, a family-owned winery with a reputation for traditional Rioja and obsessive attention to detail. Founded in 1932, Muga has become one of the region's most respected producers, and they're one of the few Rioja estates that makes its own barrels. That hands-on approach, from the vineyards through aging, gives Muga remarkable control over the style and quality of its wines.

Seleccion Especial is only made in the best years, using fruit from the family's oldest plots on steep hillsides and higher-elevation sites with poor soils. The blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo spends 26 months in new and used French and American oak, followed by a final selection of the best barrels. The result is a powerful but refined Rioja, with fine, creamy tannins and layers of warm dark cherry, spiced plum, sweet paprika, mocha, cedar, graphite, and savory herbs.
