What a gorgeous white wine from Sicily's oldest winery. Barone di Villagrande dates back to 1727, and their vineyards are on the eastern, lower slopes of Mount Etna. They produce a wonderful introduction to Carricante, one of Italy's best native white grapes, and one that is oft-compared to White Burgundy.
Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel, followed by a brief aging in mostly neutral oak. The finished wine is fresh and beautifully aromatic with a nice mix of exotic tropical fruits paired with lemon, lime, and herbal notes. It finishes with the classic minerality you'd expect from the volcanic soils of Etna. Beautiful!
