Capitain-Gagnerot's Bourgogne Rouge is one of the best Red Burgundy values we stock. This is no simple Bourgogne, coming from an old plot of Pinot Noir planted in 1945 and farmed biodynamically. Capitain-Gagnerot is a ninth-generation family estate based in Ladoix, and the family has been making wine here since 1802. The wines have that understated Burgundian character I love so much: purity, freshness, and a real sense of place without a lot of unnecessary makeup.

Juicy and joyous, this pours a lovely ruby color and smells of cherry, red plum, forest floor, and Indian spices. On the palate it is silky, seamless, and wonderfully satisfying, with the kind of finesse you simply don't expect from a Bourgogne Rouge at this level. This is a pure-pleasure wine that works beautifully with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, or salmon, but honestly, it is just as good with a baguette and some cheese. A serious Burgundy value and a bottle I would happily drink any night of the week.
