Eulogio Pomares is the mastermind behind Bodegas Zarate, one of the elite producers of Albarino. When he's not too busy running his estate, he and his cousin make a tiny amount (less than 300 cases) of a very special Albarino called Pedraneira.

From a 45-year-old vineyard just a stone's throw from the sea, this is one of the finest examples of Albarino we've ever offered. Fermented in large, French oak foudres with native yeasts and aged on the lies for 6 months, it is full-bodied, expansive, and deeply complex. Flowing with heady notes of nectarine, crystalline citrus, white peach, and saline minerality, it's a complete joy ride of a white wine.

It comes from a vineyard called Francón in Castrelo (Cambados) on the banks of the Umia River, with vines planted 35 years ago on clay soils by the water. It has restraint and feels very harmonious, with contained ripeness and 12.5% alcohol, a very elegant mouthfeel and a tasty finish with explosive flavors that reminded me of some ouillé Savagnin from Jura. After all, I believe both grapes are connected.... This is superb!"
