Terre di Giotto's Nostrale Rosso is my pick for what you want in your glass as we head towards the cooler nights of autumn. Terre di Giotto is the home estate of Michele Lorenzetti, one of the world's masters of biodynamic farming, and his 2022 Nostrale Rosso is as pretty as Sangiovese gets.
Imported by our friends at the Haw River Wine Man, this literally smells of fall, with gorgeous notes of forest floor and spiced plum. In addition, it's one of those red wines that's not too heavy, but it's not at all light, making it an ideal red for a wide variety of palates. I took it to a pizza party with friends recently, along with some other notable Italian reds, and it was everyone's favorite wine of the night!
A wine that really "grows in the glass," it comes together with about 20 minutes of air and swirling to reveal its inner core of beauty.
2022 Terre di Giotto Nostrale Rosso -- Here's why you should buy it:
- The perfume is downright delicious! Like I said, give it 15-20 minutes in the glass, and you'll be greeted by beautiful aromas of ripe cherry, plum, dried leaves, and violet.
- Equally enjoyable on the palate, Nostrale Rosso is medium-bodied, fresh, and silky, with fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity. Great with classic Italian fare like pizza or pasta with red sauce, it's also fun to drink by itself!
- Ever heard of natural wine? This falls into that camp, but it's totally stable, just a tad funky, and it's crafted by a legend in the making. Michele Lorenzetti is spreading the gospel of biodynamics and natural, minimal interventionist winemaking. Bravo!
- It is unfiltered, and in my book, that's a good thing. Most larger, higher-production wines are heavily filtered, stripping them of much of their soul and character. Don't be freaked by the slightly hazy color here, it's the way it's supposed to be :)
This is the kind of red wine you drink and thoroughly enjoy in Tuscany, but that you rarely see in these parts. Honest, pure, and truly Tuscan in every way, shape, and form, I look forward to enjoying this with some Penne alla Vodka and Italian sausage in the very near future!
