Sancerre-Like Flavors, Less than $15: 2020 Bidoli Sauvignon Blanc

Sancerre-Like Flavors, Less than $15: 2020 Bidoli Sauvignon Blanc

If you love Sancerre but hate paying the price, we've got the perfect wine for you. Bidoli is a family owned and operated winery in Friuli, in Northeastern Italy, and their elegant and refined Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best values of its type in the market.

That should come as no surprise, as Friuli is home to gravelly, rocky, and limestone-rich soils, much like those found in the Loire Valley. These ideal soils, an overachieving family estate,  and an excellent vintage combined to create one of the top Sauvignon Blanc values in the world. We just received 14 cases of this wonderful wine. At least once a year, Mike Tiano of the Haw River Wine Man blind tastes me on this wine -- every single time I guess high quality Loire Valley Sauv Blanc. Every single time Mike smiles and pulls Bidoli Sauvignon Blanc out of the bag. I always feel a bit humbled, to say the least, but what I'm telling you is that this is a ton of Sauvignon Blanc for the money.

Bidoli Vini is a third generation, family-run estate based in Friuli, in Northeastern Italy. Founded in 1924, the estate takes advantage of the rocky soils this region is known for. The rocks heat up during the day and cool off at night, providing optimal ripeness while maintaining crisp acidity. The unique character of these soils combined with the cooling effects of the Adriatic Sea and the shelter provided by the Dolomites and the Alps create ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.

Get a bottle (or six), chill, open, and stick your nose in the glass. You will be greeted with aromas of ripe citrus, pear, green apple, green herbs, and just a whiff of mineral. Not quite as racy and zippy as a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this one is possesses a more rounded and elegant acidity and a fine texture. All in all, this is just a wonderful wine at a wonderful price.

Serve this to your friends, alongside good conversations, and with just about any sort of seafood/fish you like. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville.
