Every once in a while, I come across a wine that just flat-out overperforms for the price, and I feel obligated to pass it along. The Gran Passione Rosso is one of those.
This is Italy's Veneto doing what it does best. Rich, smooth, and immediately satisfying, this is made in an appassimento-inspired style, with partially dried grapes. That process allows the grapes to drop water before they are pressed, and it adds extra depth and richness that you'd normally associate with Amarone, just without the hefty price tag.
In the glass, it’s loaded with dark cherry, ripe plum, mocha, and baking spice. It’s got a nice, velvety texture, with just enough structure to keep it from going over the top. There’s a hint of that Amarone-like richness, but it stays more easygoing and a whole lot easier on the budget.
It’s a crowd-pleaser all the way, and wines that deliver this combination of richness and luxurious texture usually cost a lot more.
