The Campo Hermoso Tinto is my new house red. A fresh and enlivening blend of mainly Mencia from Bierzo, it's stupid-good, honest, and cleanly-made Spanish red wine at a very attractive price.
Mencia often gets compared to Pinot Noir, and I get it. Like Pinot Noir, it's typically a medium-bodied, silky smooth, red fruited wine, but unlike Pinot Noir, Mencia contains high levels of terpenoids. This sub-group of aroma compounds infuse Mencia-based wines with more floral nuances, namely violet and rose petal.
Like it's white wine counterpart, the Zebedeo Blanco, this is a personal project of importer Alex Finberg on the Transparent Wine Company. That man is doing great work!

Alex recently put together an impressive portfolio of Spanish wines, and they're just starting to land in the US. With Campo Hermoso, he reached out to his growers and producers and asked them if they had excess fruit to sell. He found great fruit sources, all of them sustainable, organic, and biodynamic, and this wine is the result of those efforts.
One of Alex's foundational principles is to buy wines from folks who take care of their land. I respect this fully, and I love "clean farming" when it leads to delicious wines. That is exactly what you get here -- cleanly farmed, cleanly made, but most importantly, SUPER TASTY!
Almost all Mencia, with smaller amounts of Tempranillo, Caino, and Alicante Bouschet, this tank-fermented red is full in flavor yet light on its feet. Generous aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, strawberry, dried rose, violet, and spice are all on display here.
For those who like reds with soft tannins, mellow acids, and loads of red fruits, you're going to love this extreme value red. An ideal aperitif red, it would also be super tasty with chicken, pork, salmon, or burgers.
