2020 Maison Capitain-Gagnerot Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc 'Les Gueulottes'

Enchanting, Sophisticated White Burgundy: Capitain Gagnerot Hautes Cotes de Beaune 'Les Guelottes'

SOLD OUT -- Many of you know and love the Red Burgundies of Capitain-Gagnerot. Guess what? They make excellent whites too, and their 2020 Les Guelottes comes from a 2-acre site on the north side of the famed Corton hillside.

No, this is not Corton-Charlemagne, not even close, but dang it's good! There's classic White Burg minerality and purity, the aromatics are delightful, and the overall style is quite noble. The hot and dry 2020 vintage stressed the vines of Burgundy, but the resulting wines are quite open and inviting.

I bought my supplier's last 7 cases of this one, and I'm in good mood :) tonight. Thus, the incredible pricing....

Allen Meadows of Burghound summed up the Capitain-Gagnerot house style very well with 8 words. “The Capitain style is one of understated purity.” Wiser words have rarely been spoken. Here's a wine that transports  you to a sunny day in Dijon, and it really captures the soul of White Burgundy in a big way.

From a plot of biodynamically-farmed Chardonnay planted in 1992, this small site has soils that every Chardonnay producer in the world dreams of. CHALK and SAND. The sandy soils drain well, stressing the vines to produce fuller and more detailed aromas and flavors. The chalk, a result of ancient fossilized seashells, blesses the wine with wonderful, high-toned minerality.

The finished wine is both delicious and contemplative. Aged for 8 months in French oak (just 10% new), it showcases ripe and attractive aromas of pear, white flowers, lemon curd, and wet rock. This all leads into a precise, persistent, and complex palate that finishes long and keeps you coming back for sip after sip.

Like their Bourgogne Rouge, which is also on sale currently, this one is a bit dangerous, as it goes down way too easily. A great aperitif, it also works well alongside everything from lobster and crab cakes to rotisserie chicken and roasted potatoes.

I'm gonna' warn you, our White Burgundy contingent is quite rabid. This might be gone in a hot minute....
