Valsotillo Finca Buenavista

Crazy Ribera del Duero Value: 2018 Valsotillo Finca Buenavista

The 2018 Finca Buenavista Ribera del Duero combines Old World charm with New World ripeness to create a rich, stylish, and sophisticated red wine that could easily pass for a $30+ bottle.

I have put some aggressive pricing in place for a good reason. While this wine is drinking well now, it's going to improve and age for 5 to 7 years or more. Stock up, save big, and enjoy some now and some more down the road!

Is there a better value in rich, hearty, and barrel-aged Tempranillo out there? If you find it, let me know. ValSotillo is the home estate of Ismael Arroyo, who helped propel Ribera del Duero to DO status in 1982. His family has farmed these vineyards in Western Spain since the 16th century. Let's just say Ismael and his family know a thing or two about growing Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) in this rugged terrain.

This region is renowned for its deep, rich, and concentrated Tempranillo-based reds, and this wine definitely lives up to that description. 100% Tinta del Pais, the local name for Tempranillo, Finca Buenavista is produced from old, organically farmed vines, and the wine sees 6 to 8 months of aging in French and American oak.

These 50+ year old bush vines produce grapes with thicker skins that yield bold and intense Tempranillo flavors, and the oak treatment works wonderfully well here. When I tasted this last week, I swear it made me think of Silver Oak. I'm not kidding folks, while this might not be quite as full and toasty as Silver Oak, it has that same combination of soft palate, round tannins, lush texture, and spicy and toasty oak.

It's not just oak driving the bus here though. Far from it, there's wonderful aromas and flavors of cherry liqueur, dark berries, violet, and exotic spices as well. All in all, if you like fuller styled Riojas, Bordeaux, and/or Napa Cab, you'll love this wine and be delighted with the price.

Enjoy this Tempranillo with lamb, hearty stews, or skip the food and just pour yourself a glass. Swirl, have a sniff, have a sip, and repeat. Cheers to drinking the good stuff in the AVL!
