2023 Chateau Peyrassol La Croix Rose
A taste of Provence, minus the plane ticket!
No discussion of dry Provencal rose would be complete without mention of the historic and legendary Chateau Peyrassol. Located in the back country hills of the Var, north of St. Tropez, the Commanderie de Peyrassol was founded by the Knights Templar. The first recorded harvest at the estate occurred in 1256, and winemaking has continued uninterrupted throughout the centuries.
This singular estate, more than any other, has helped to enhance and elevate the reputation of Provencal rose to a worldwide audience. When I tasted the new vintage last week, I knew I had to buy big. Why? Because this stuff is absolutely delicious. Even better, my distributor has a bunch of it in stock....for now. I think once other wine buyers taste this, that situation will change fast.
I could honestly just look at and smell this wine all day. That gorgeous, pale pink color lets you know it comes from Provence, and the bouquet purveys that sense of place as well. Delicate aromas and flavors of white cherry, raspberry, citrus, and green herbs all make an appearance in this dry and brisk pink wine. A thirst-quencher for sure, this tastes especially good on pretty spring and summer days.
Perfect for lighter spring fare, La Crox is also fantastic with nothing more than a glass, a good friend, and a patio, porch, pool, or beach. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville this spring!
