I have been a longtime fan of every wine that Fabio Chiarelotto makes at Montepeloso, one of Coastal Tuscany's greatest estates. His 2023 Eneo Rosso can be summed up with one word: SENSATIONAL.

This pure, elegant, savory, and complex blend of 65% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Malvasia Nera is a “clear step up in depth and complexity” from Montepeloso’s A Quo, according to Jeb Dunnuck. A Quo is the estate’s delicious entry-level wine, and you’ll find it in a number of retail outlets. Eneo is made in much smaller quantities and is allocated, making it considerably harder to find.
With Eneo, you can taste the difference that a truly obsessive, hands-on producer makes. The Maremma is one of Tuscany’s hottest areas, and Fabio has always said it’s easy to make concentrated wines here, but much harder to achieve elegance and finesse. Eneo is proof that Fabio has figured out how to do it.
Made from vines in the hills of Suvereto, just south of Bolgheri on Tuscany's west coast, this is my kind of Super Tuscan. There's gorgeous purity to the dark cherry and blackberry fruit, but it's the savory complexity in the form of violet, lavender, mint, rosemary, and exotic spices that really gets me going. On the palate, the tannins are refined, the acidity is refreshing, and the overall style is one of balance over sheer power.
I'm not surprised these critics loved this: 94 from Vinous, 95 from Suckling, and 93 from Jeb Dunnuck. All three praised its elegance, refinement, and beauty.
This is already incredibly appealing, but there's plenty of structure here for it to evolve gracefully over the next 10-15 years.
