2022 J. Bookwalter 'Foreshadow' Cabernet Sauvignon
93 points Wine Spectator | $50 suggested retail
Jerry Bookwalter is a legend of the Columbia Valley. He helped plant and manage the Sagemoor, Bacchus, and Dionysus Vineyards, three sites that today are considered holy ground for Washington state Cabernet Sauvignon. After selling Cabernet to the likes of Gary Figgins of Leonetti Cellars and Rick Small at Woodward Canyon from 1976 to 1982, Jerry decided it was time to do his own thing.
He started Bookwalter Winery in 1982, making wines that relied on grapes from these same heritage sites. His wines were immediately well-received, and that remains the case today. While Jerry passed away in 2023 -- click HERE for a great interview with him from '22 -- his son John continues the family legacy.
Their 2022 Foreshadow Cabernet Sauvignon is one that will appeal to those who love big, broad-shouldered, and smooth Cabs that you can drink now. I count myself among that cadre, and I found this to be downright delicious when I tasted it with my rep last week. Deeply colored and full-flavored, this exhibits classic notes of dark cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry, mint, dark chocolate, and oak spice.
Full-bodied and round in texture, this is ripe and richly textured, and in all honesty, it reminded me of a Kirk Venge-made wine. Despite it's "BIG-NESS," it's smooth and silky, and it doesn't need additional time in bottle to show its best. It's drinking well now, and I can't wait for you to try it.
Wine Spectator's Tim Fish very accurately described this one. "Vibrant and richly structured, with deep black cherry and cassis flavors that take on accents of cayenne and grilled anise, ending with broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2032. 4,914 cases made."
Bring on the beef for this one -- I'm looking forward to enjoying this with a ribeye, and John Bookwalter recommends a Wagyu bacon cheeseburger. Sounds good to me, but don't think you need food to enjoy this one.
