The 2022 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri is a wine that flirts with perfection, and to me, it embodies everything a great Super Tuscan should be.
Rated 95-96 points by Vinous Media, Wine Advocate, Decanter, and Jeb Dunnuck, this wine finds itself in some very enviable company. It actually outscored Tignanello ($200), landed just one point behind Sassicaia ($275), and tied Solaia ($350+). Pretty impressive company for a wine that still flies a bit under the radar.
Founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio, Tua Rita is located in Suvereto, just south of Bolgheri in the heart of “Super Tuscan Territory.” When they established the estate, many thought they were crazy, as the prevailing wisdom at the time was that Bordeaux varieties could not fully ripen in this part of Coastal Tuscany.
Rita and Virgilio proved their critics wrong. When they released their first wines in 1992, they earned immediate praise from top critics, writers, and wine lovers around the world. More than 30 years later, Tua Rita continues to craft some of Coastal Tuscany’s greatest red wines, yet their pricing remains remarkably fair.
Case in point is the 2022 Giusto di Notri, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. I just call it like I taste it, and to me, this drinks like a Classified Growth Pauillac sprinkled with Tuscan flair and bravado. I had a glass after work last night, and I can confirm that the critics are right. Bold, ripe, and creamy on the palate, this is “rock star juice” offering up notes of cassis, baked cherry and plum, cedar, spice box, bittersweet chocolate, and pipe tobacco.
Is it drinking well now? Absolutely. I sipped my glass slowly over the course of an hour, and it seemed to reveal another dimension every 5-10 minutes. Will it age? YES, Jeb Dunnuck called it “a very, very impressive, elegant wine” and sees it drinking beautifully over the next 20 years....
So there you, a true Insider's Offer on one of the best Super Tuscans of the vintage. Those 24 bottles won't last long 😊
