Red Blends are all the rage these days, but blending grape varieties together is nothing new. It’s been a common practice in famed regions like Bordeaux, Chateauneuf du Pape, and Napa Valley for hundreds of years. Stop by the store this Friday to taste a trio of wines from near and far made by masterfully blending different grapes. After searching for quite a while, we’ve found a North Carolina wine that we can really get behind. That will get the party started! The mixer continues with a new Portuguese red blend that offers tons of flavor at a very modest price. We finish with a Table Wine staple from the Ventoux region of France imported by Charles Neal. 1. NV Sanctuary Vineyards “Morton” Red Table Wine (Outer Banks, North Carolina) – Just three miles from the Atlantic Ocean, Sanctuary Vineyards uses all five Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot) to craft their “Morton” Red Blend. It’s juicy, easy drinking, and more importantly, it’s the North Carolina wine we’ve been searching for.

2. 2015 Aplanta Red Wine Blend (Alentejo, Portugal) – Composed of 70% Aragonez (Tempranillo) and 30% Alicante Bouschet, this is destined to become a Table Wine top seller. It shows a deep color, it balances ripe berry fruit with structure, and it’s about $10 per bottle! An interesting side note is that Aplanta’s grapes are grown in a community vineyard planted in 2002 after the village was relocated to make space for a much-needed reservoir in the middle of one of the most arid regions of Western Europe. The wine is said to be a “liquid link” between us and the story of Aldeia da Luz and its people.

3. 2015 Les Terrasses d’Eole Rouge (Ventoux, France) – For many years Claude and Gisele Saurel grew grapes to sell to the local cooperative. However, fresh from Agronomy school, son Stephane convinced them to start bottling on their own in 1998. We’re glad he did as this blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre combines incredible complexity with pleasure-bent drinkability unmatched in this price range. We like to call this one poor man’s Chateauneuf du Pape!
