When it comes to grape vines, age matters! It’s widely agreed upon in the wine world that old vines make better wine. As vines get older, their production declines and they produce less grape bunches. As yields go down, concentration of flavor goes up. Unfortunately, there is no law or regulation that dictates what qualifies as old vines. But at Table Wine, our rule is that 30+ year old vines qualify for the ‘Old Vines’ designation. 1. German Gilabert Cava Brut Nature Rosat “El Eden” (Penedes, Spain) – This is a stunning sparkling wine from high altitude, organically farmed vineyards in the Alt Penedes region. Composed entirely of 40 to 50 year old vine Garnacha, it’s bottled without any sugar added at the dosage. Made exactly like Champagne, this super dry, pale pink colored wine showcases lovely notes of blood orange, cranberry and minerality. It’s the mineral notes that really showcase the old vine character of this one. Yum!
2. 2017 Le Cirque Grenache Gris (Roussillon, France) – Produced from 70 year old, low yielding Grenache Gris grown under the Mediterranean sunshine, this is a lovely white wine and not one you come across very often. Grenache Gris is used more often in dry rose production and for blending purposes, but here it’s the star of the show. Showing lovely purity and sea salt-like minerality, there’s intense notes of fruit, flowers and spice that could only come from old vines.
3. 2017 Domaine Maurice Charleux et Fils Bourgogne Rouge (Burgundy, France) –Located in Dezize-les-Maranges, about 4 kilometers southwest of Santenay in southern Cote de Beaune, this family run estate was founded in 1894. What’s amazing to me is that the Pinot Noir they use for their ‘entry level’ wine come from 50+ year old vines. Fermented and aged in tank and older barrels, it’s medium-bodied, silky and complex, with lovely red fruit notes, delicate spices, and complex and earthy mineral nuances.
4. 2016 Celler de Capcanes Mas Donis ‘Old Vines’ (Montsant, Spain) – This perennial great value is also a legitimate old vine wine. Composed of 85% Grenache from 50 year old vines and 15% Syrah from 30-35 year old vines, it drinks like a Priorat at a fraction of the price. “Tasting like a top Priorat with its beautiful blue fruits, violets, ground pepper, rose petals, and amble minerality, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, remarkable purity of fruit, and a great, great finish.” – Jeb Dunnuck – 94 points
