1. Zum Martin Sepp Gruner Veltliner – This is the white wineyou want to have in your fridge for after-work sipping. Fresh and fruit-driven, but dry, it is about as refreshing as white wine gets.
2. Weingut Cobenzl Gemischter Satz – Gemischter Satz is a traditional blended white wine made in vineyards surrounding the city of Vienna. It is the only wine that has been recognized by Slow Foods International and it is delicious.
3. Ernst Clusserath “Mosel Street” Riesling – This is lovely, almost-dry Riesling from a great little family estate. Embrace Riesling my friends – it is one of the truly noble white varietals on the planet!
4. Bodega San Prudencio Rioja “Cueto” – This has become our new house red and it is very affordable and very delicious. Mostly Tempranillo, it displays lovely, ripe berry fruit with just a touch of spicy, vanilla-infused oak.
5. Pittnauer Rot – Rot is Austrian for red and this blend of indigenous Austrian varietals is dangerously easy to drink, even more so because it comes in a liter bottle!
6. Onix Priorat “Classic” – I predict that 2012 will be the year of Priorat at Table Wine! This region in northeastern Spain is home to a bunch of old vine Grenache and Carignan and the wines are full, rich and spicy with lots of jammy fruit.
7. Puertas Novas Toro – Toro is one of the hottest and driest regions in Spain. It is also home to some lovely, old vine Tinta de Toro, aka Tempranillo. These are dark, rich, dense red wines that are quite different than the Tempranillo-based wines of Rioja.
8. La Ardilla Moscato de Valencia – We’ll finish with a lightly fizzy, sweet white wine that is somewhat reminiscent of a Moscato d’Asti. This delightful little wine is just simply delicious and would make a great finishing wine for a dinner party.
