Malbec is more popular than ever, and there’s a good reason for that. With it’s full-bodied, yet plush and round style, it falls somewhere in between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But not all Malbecs are created equally. With its immense popularity, everybody and their brother is making it these days. And that means there’s some really bad ones out there. Not at Table Wine though! Nope, we take great pride in our Malbec selections, and we think you’ll recognize quality when you taste it. Stop by, taste, learn, and save big every Saturday at Table Wine.
All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only.
1. 2017 Finca Sophenia Altosur Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) – It’s our Case of the Month, and it’s one of the top Malbec values in the world. 100% estate-grown fruit, hand harvested grapes, and aging in REAL oak barrels makes this is a ton of wine for the money. “This shows florals and dried red cherries but there’s also lots of blueberry, spice box and eucalyptus character as well as ash and tar. Medium body, fresh acidity, fine tannins and a minerally finish. Drink now.” – James Suckling – 92 points
2. 2016 Chateau Combel la Serre Cahors (Cahors, France) – The town of Cahors, in Southwestern France, is possibly the genetic birthplace of Malbec. And the region’s wines are a bit different than those that come from Argentina. Here’s a fine example. Julian Ilbert’s certified organic vineyards yield a fresh, earthy and spicy version of Malbec. For fans of the classic, traditional French wines, this might be your new jam.
3. 2016 Finca Decero Malbec “Remolinos Vineyard” (Mendoza, Argentina) – We’ll finish with a bigger, riper, more opulent effort from Argentina’s Decero. This impressive estate planted all of their own vineyards nearly 20 years ago. These days, their vines have reached maturity, yielding gorgeous wines with bold and impressive flavors. “The 2016 Malbec Remolinos Vineyard is a big, ripe, opulent effort that, like the 2015, is a terrific value. Blueberries, jammy black raspberries, ground pepper, and underbrush all give way to a ripe, full-bodied Malbec that has terrific purity and balance. It’s a sexy fruit bomb to drink over the coming 4-5 years.” – Jeb Dunnuck – 90 points
