Saturday, November 24th from 2-5pm – It’s Asheville’s best free wine tasting, and we’re pouring up a trio of stunning Spanish wines. Join us to taste one of our favorite Albarinos, an elegant and refined Mencia, and a special red from one of the country’s hottest producers.
Exciting things are happening in the world of Spanish winemaking! During the past few decades, modern technology and oenological science have met with centuries of viticultural history and tradition to elevate the wines of Spain to new levels of quality and excellence. All the producers featured here are small, family owned operations that combine pre-industrial agriculture with cutting edge wine making to produce terroir expressive wines that can easily compete on the world stage. The examples we’ll be pouring are all made from indigenous grapes grown on special sites that are sustainably or organically farmed and fermented with great care in state-of-the-art facilities. The results are fresh, sophisticated, and delicious wines that still honor the traditions and terroirs of this great, ancient land. Come and taste for yourself!
All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only.
1. 2017 Xión Albariño (Rias Baixas, Spain): A perfect storm of warm weather, older vines, granite soils and skillful winemaking come together in this beautifully balanced white. It’s fresh and fragrant with crisp acidity, juicy orchard fruits and subtle spice and mineral notes. A customer and staff favorite not to be missed!
2. 2016 Guímaro Mencía (Ribeira Sacra, Spain): From 40 year old vineyards on the steep slopes of the ‘Sacred River’ comes this luscious, unoaked tinto of Mencía. A local variety often compared to Pinot Noir, Mencía wines offer a heady potpourri of ripe red fruits, exotic spices, minerals and floral aromatics. Pairs nicely with poultry and pork!
3. 2017 Envinate Albahra (Almansa, Spain): This is one of my favorite Spanish reds in the store! A blend of Alicante Bouschet and Moravia Agria, this one balances power with elegance and ripe fruit with mineral and savory spice. The 2016 vintage of this one scored 97 points (James Suckling), and I’m predicting the new vintage will gain similar marks.
