Free Wine Tasting - Sangiovese Showdown - Friday, March 15

Friday, March 15th from 4-7pm – Tuscan Wine Lovers Unite for the best free wine tasting in Asheville. Join us Friday to taste a trio of Tuscan Sangioveses, from the simple to the sublime.

Think you know Sangiovese? Not so fast! Rarely found outside of Italy, the grape takes on different personalities in the various environments and terroirs of Italy. In fact, just in Tuscany alone, there are 3 different mutations of Sangiovese — Sangioveto for Chianti, Sangiovese Grosso for Brunello, and Prugnolo Gentile for Vino Nobile — and the wines taste dramatically different. Confused yet? Don’t worry, we’ll talk and taste you through the differences at this engaging and educational tasting of Tuscan Sangioveses. Stop by, taste, learn, and save!

1. 2016 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti ‘Cetamura’ (Tuscany, Italy) – Here’s a great introduction to one of the most classic versions of Sangiovese, the one produced in the rolling hills of Chianti in Central Italy. Medium-bodied, fresh and flowing with ripe red fruits and plum, this certainly isn’t the most complex wine on the planet, but it’s very satisfying.

2. 2016 Felsina Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy) – We’re taking a major qualitative leap here folks! Felsina is one of the top producers in the Chianti Classico DOCG, and 2016 was a very successful vintage for them. Showing more weight, structure, intensity and complexity than wine #1, this exhibits the more savory side of Sangiovese. “Leather, game, smoke, tobacco and licorice infuse a wine that oozes Sangiovese character.” – Antonio Galloni – 91+ points

3. 2012 Casanuova delle Cerbaie Rivale Rosso Toscana (Tuscany, Italy) – Sangiovese does wonderful things as it ages, and here’s a prime example. Based in Montalcino, Casanuova delle Cerbaie is a small, traditional, family owned and operated estate. Their Rivale Super Tuscan is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the estate releases this one late, when they feel it’s drinking perfectly. Bravo! This is a great example of mature Sangiovese showcasing notes of leather, earth, savory spice, and cherry/black cherry.
