Blending grapes together to create wine is nothing new. In fact, the practice has been used for hundreds of years in all of the major wine zones of the world. Why you ask? For most, it’s pragmatic. By blending grapes with opposing traits and characteristics, winemakers are able to create better and more balanced wines. Red Zinfandel is a prime example — on its own, it can be light in color and too fruity. But when blended with Petite Sirah, which it often is, the wine gains much needed boldness and structure. And the art of blending, widespread from Champagne and Bordeaux to Napa Cab and Sonoma Zin, is what we will focus on for this tasting. Stop by, taste some delicious wines, save some big bucks, and learn something new.

All the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only.

1. 2016 Lost and Found Red Blend (Various Regions, California): This is a new one, and it’s the pet project of Master Sommelier Geoff Kruth. The blend here is Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvedre, a classic blend commonly found in the red wines produced in France’s Languedoc/Roussillon region. The Carignan brings red fruit and bright acidity while the Mourvèdre adds blue fruit and texture. Cinsault provides added spice and elegance. The combination leads to a medium-full bodied wine that is delicious and easy to drink with a wide range of foods.

2. 2017 Kanonkop Kadette (Stellenbosch, South Africa): Kanonkop is one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected wineries, and they’ve been making this one for years. The 2017 combines 37% Pinotage, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc to create a savory, smoky red wine. Offering up bold notes of black currant, mint, vanilla, and black tea, it’s distinctive and delicious.

3. 2016 Marietta Cellars Zinfandel “Roman” (North Coast, California) – We love our Marietta wines at Table Wine, and their 2016 Roman is named after their longtime cellarmaster. And like I was saying earlier, the addition of Petite Sirah and a bit of Barbera really add to the appeal of this wine. “The Zinfandel-based 2016 Román is plump, juicy and forward. Succulent red cherry, plum, spice and leather are all propped up by bright acids.” – Vinous Media – 90 points
