Free Wine Tasting - Outstanding Italian Wines - Friday, October 19

Friday, October 19th from 4-7pm – For this Friday’s free wine tasting, we’ll pull the corks on a trio of Outstanding Italian Wines. If you love traditional and fairly priced Italian wines, you don’t want to miss this tasting.

Fans of hand-crafted, small production, delicious Italian wines, this is your tasting! Why? Because we’re pulling the corks on some awesome new arrivals. We’ll start the journey with a world-class Soave from Coffele, one of the region’s top producers. After that, it’s vibrant and peppery Valpolicella Superiore from Monte Tondo. Like Coffele, Monte Tondo is one of the most respected producers in the DOC. And to wrap it up, it’s our new Wine of the Week, a “Baby Brunello” from top-notch producer Luca Brunelli. With Brunello-like aromas and flavors, but with a much softer and rounder personality, it’s a winner all the way. 1. 2016 Coffele Soave Classico “Ca’Visco” (Veneto, Italy) – Coffele is one of the benchmark wineries in the midieval town of Soave. Since 1928, this family-run, biodynamic producer has been producing some of the region’s top white wines. “Fine, ripe stone fruit and white flower notes with refreshing citrus acidity aligned with a stony mineral quality. Soft and gentle but has the structure to age for a good few years yet.” – Decanter – 90 points

2. 2016 Monte Tondo Valpolicella Superiore (Veneto, Italy) – Monte Tondo, like Coffele, is based in the town of Soave, and their whites are outstanding. But their lone red is a wonderful example of Valpolicella. Composed of 55% Corvina, 30% Rondinella, and 15% Molinara, this one falls somewhere in between a Ripasso and a basic Valpolicella Classico. The grapes are dried for about a month in a well ventilated “fruttai” before pressing, and ultimately aged for five months in oak. Not a frivolous wine, it packs loads of sour black cherry aromas, spices, violets, and roses.

3. 2017 Luca Brunelli Poggio Apricale (Tuscany, Italy) – This might be the best value Tuscan red in the store! Luca Brunelli makes stunning, age-worthy Brunello di Montalcinos, and he makes this wine for earlier drinking. Composed of 85% Sangiovese Grosso from their younger vines in Montalcino along with a bit of Merlot and Colorino, the wine sees just 3 months of aging in neutral oak barrels. The resulting wine is medium to full bodied, with classic notes of dark cherry/cherry, sage, anise, and spice.
