The Wines
1. 2014 Santa Luz Sauvignon Blanc “Alba” (Central Valley, Chile) – Chile is gaining a very good reputation for her Sauvignon Blancs and this is a great introduction. Fresh and zesty, with simple melon, grapefruit, and pear notes, this is cheap and good enough to buy by the case. It’s just that simple!
2. 2013 Barker’s Marque “Arona” Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) – This is a great introduction to the New Zealand style of Sauvignon Blanc. There’s a lot of pure Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc character, but there’s more complexity in this one than most in this price range. Super crisp, tart, and totally refreshing, it offers up generous flavors of pink grapefruit, passion fruit, lime zest, and gravelly minerality.
3. 2014 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) – It’s our Wine of the Week, and it’s one of the best New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs we’ve ever stocked. Founded by the former viticulturist and winemaker from Cloudy Bay, Dog Point has catapulted into the upper echelon of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc producers in a relatively short period of time (their first vintage was 2005). This is nearly perfect New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in our opinions — fresh and zesty, but beautifully textured, and very long on the finish. Think about it — you’re drinking one of the best of its type and you can take it home today for less than $20!
