1. 2017 Marziano Abbona Barbera “Casaret” (Piemonte, Italy) – Wow! This fresh and versatile Barbera, from Piemonte all-star Abbona, is crushable and interesting. Laced with notes of spice and floral-accented cherry, raspberry, and plum, it is medium-bodied, vibrant, and perfect for all sorts of meals.

2. 2013 Pruneto Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy) – Riccardo Lanza is putting the CLASSIC back into Chianti Classico. His 100% Sangiovese-based red is about as traditional and old-school as Chianti gets. Showing more savory notes of earth, herb, and spice as opposed to overt fruit, it will not please everyone, but I absolutely love it. Drink now or cellar for 10-15 years.

3. 2015 Padelletti Rosso di Montalcino (Tuscany, Italy) –In her excellent book ‘Brunello di Montalcino,’ Kerin O’Keefe writes ‘In Montalcino, there are traditionalists and there is Padelletti. This is one of Montalcino’s oldest families, and not much has changed here in 2 centuries. Farming is done organically, fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, and only older barrels are used for aging. The resulting wine is textbook Rosso at a great price. Tart cherry, red plum, mouthwatering acidity, and a long and very attractive palate.
