Red Blends are all the rage right now, but many of you might not know that blending various grapes together has been going on for many years. By combining different grapes with different flavors and structural characteristics, winemakers are able to create wines that are integrated and delicious. This is your chance to compare 3 unique red blends that vary in taste based on the assemblage of grapes and the particular regions from which they come. We’ll start with a fresh and juicy Pinot Noir/Gamay blend from the southern part of Burgundy before we move on to a bold and balanced Valpolicella Ripasso. We’ll finish up with amazingly rich and concentrated 2013 Hill Family Barrel Blend, a wine that Robert Parker awarded 93 points. Even better, it sells for far less than $30/bottle! 1. 2014 Vignerons de Buxy Buissonier (Coteaux Bourguignons, France) – This deliciously fresh blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay is just downright charming. Medium bodied, low in tannin, and possessing pure notes of ripe red cherry, strawberry, and subtle earthy nuances, it is perfect for sipping on cool fall nights.

2. 2013 Corte Majoli Valpolicella Ripasso (Veneto, Italy) – Valpolicella is one of the classic wines and growing zones of Italy’s Veneto region. The wines are always red and they are always blends of the regions native varietals. Corte Majoli’s version combines 65% Corvina with 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, and wine is fermented in contact with the skins of the estate’s Amarone to add more stuffing to the wine. It works! With notes of dark cherry, raisins, clove and toasty oak, this full bodied, richly textured wine offers up loads of flavor and complexity for a humble price.

3. 2013 Hill Family Barrel Blend Proprietary Red (Napa Valley, California) – Vintage 2013 was a great one in Napa, and we’re going to go ahead and call this the greatest value of the vintage. A big blend of 50% Merlot, 13% Malbec, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest a kitchen-sink assemblage of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, this is a wine that Robert Parker called “a stunner.” We agree! “Inky bluish/purple with notes of blueberry liqueur, black raspberry, licorice and incense, this full-bodied opulent wine hits all the sweet spots on the palate, but is dry and full-bodied with voluptuous texture, terrific palate presence and complexity.” – Robert Parker – 93 points
