Free on Fridays Wine Tasting - Australian Wines

Free on Friday’s Wine Tasting this Friday, August 5th from 2-7 p.m. featuring some deliciously affordable Australian wines! Australia is the world’s fourth largest exporter of wine, and the vine has thrived throughout the country since the early 1800’s. Australia is highly regarded for rich and jammy reds, especially Shiraz, but the country’s vignerons also produced some seriously delicious and engaging white wines. From dry Riesling to white Rhone varietals like Viognier and Marsanne, Australia’s white wines are some of the hidden treasures of the wine world. We’ll pour you a couple of those along with a highly rated Shiraz produced by one of France’s first families of wine. Stop by, taste, learn, and save big on all of the tasting wines.

1. 2014 Pikes Riesling “Hills and Valleys” (Clare Valley, Australia) – Brothers Andrew and Neil Pike established Pikes Wines in 1984 and continue to manage every aspect of the business today. Their specialty is dry Riesling, and they produce one of Australia’s best versions. From black slate soiled vineyards located in Australia’s Clare Valley, slightly northwest of the Barossa Valley, this wine is completely dry and laced with bright citrus, peach, floral and mineral notes. Super refreshing and a wonderful wine to serve with seasonal vegetables and lighter fare, this is a winner in our books!

2. 2014 Domaine Tournon Mathilda White (Victoria, Australia) – Seeking excellence in the land Down Under, Frenchman Michel Chapoutier founed Domaine Tournon in 2009 in the Victorian Pyrenees in South-Central Australia. It has been a very successful endeavour, and we love the work they’re doing. Their Mathilda White is named after Michel’s daughter and is a blend of mostly Viognier with a touch of Marsanne. Exotically scented with a fleshy core of juicy orange blossom and mango, it finishes fresh and dry with notes of citrus zest.

3. 2013 Domaine Tournon Mathilda Shiraz (Victoria, Australia) – Simply put, this is one of Australia’s greatest red wine values! Being that Michel Chapoutier makes some of the best Syrah-based wines in France, it is not surprising that he has mastered the varietal in Australia. Fermented and aged completely in stainless steel and concrete, this medium to full bodied red is packed with aromas and flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, plum and black pepper. Smooth and silky on the palate, try this one with just about anything off the grill.
