Winemaker Andrew Jones has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential. He strives for unique wines loaded with personality and a one-of-a-kind experience. Since 2007, Jones has worked with vineyards scattered throughout California’s Central Coast and Paso Robles AVA’s to craft interesting, pure, and overtly drinkable reds and whites. And as impressed as I am with his fruit sourcing, I’m even more impressed with his winemaking. He’s got a deft touch, creating wines that are full personality and freshness. And he’s not afraid to work with grapes not commonly found in California. Keep reading about the wines below — you’ll see what I mean. Or just stop by to taste, learn, and save every Friday at Table Wine!

All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only.

1. 2016 Field Recordings Chenin Blanc (Central Coast, California): I’ll get it out of the way up front — this is the best domestic Chenin I’ve ever tasted. From three separate, old vine vineyards in and around Santa Barbara, there’s a wonderful balance between weighty texture and lightning acidity that makes you go back for sip after sip. Laced with notes of ripe apple, lemon, mineral, and floral stuff, it’s rich and crisp at the same time.

2. 2017 Field Recordings Wonderwall Pinot Noir (Central Coast, California): One sniff and sip of this, and I bought all 7 cases that my distributor brought in! In a world of very underwhelming, “value” Pinot Noir, this stands tall. Boasting lively notes of ripe cherry/black cherry, pomegranate, cranberry, almond, and black tea, this is some distinctive juice at a very attractive price.

3. 2015 Field Recordings Fiction Red Blend (Paso Robles, California) – Fiction was the first Field Recordings wine I ever bought, and after re-tasting it a couple of weeks back, I understand why. A blend of 8 different grapes, led by Zinfandel, Syrah, and Mourvedre, it’s rich, hearty, inviting, and delicious. Luscious and full-bodied, but silky smooth, this one coats the palate with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, dark cherry, and assorted spices. YUM!

4. 2017 Field Recordings Neverland Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Barbara County, California) – From high elevation sites that no one would think to plant to Cabernet, thus the name Neverland, this is about as pleasure-bent and easy-drinking as Cab gets. Layered with notes of black currant, spearmint, bacon, and smoked cedar planks, it is plush, both in aromatics and in mouth feel, with blueberry , violets, kirsch and creme de cassis joining notes of tobacco and cola.
