The Bordeaux region is one of the most famous in the world, and I think folks tend to think you have to spend a pretty penny to get the good stuff. Not always the case. And we’re going to prove that at this tasting. Join us to sample a couple of great deals from small, independent vigneron Olivier Cailloux of Chateau Haut-La Pereyere. They’re great wines that won’t break the bank, but we’ll finish with a seriously impressive, Merlot-driven wine from Chateau Boutisse, an estate that has seriously climbed the ranks in the past few vintages. Their 2015 is showing like thoroughbred, and this is your chance to try it. At less than $40, it’s actually quite reasonable, especially considering the quality. 1. 2016 Chateau Haut-La Pereyere Bordeaux Blanc (Bordeaux, France): Olivier Cailleux is the sixth generation to manage his family’s vineyards and winery. Located in the Haut-Benauge appellation of Bordeaux, this area is comprised of the the coveted high ground inland from the historic river town of Cadillac. Olivier’s white wine is made in very small amounts and is composed of all three of the allowable grapes for White Bordeaux: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Semillon, and 15% Sauvignon Gris. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and the wine is made with extensive lees contact. Super zesty and mouthwateringly delicious, this pure, citrus and green apple flavored wine keeps you coming back for sip after sip.
2.2016 Chateau Haut-La Pereyere Bordeaux Rouge (Bordeaux, France): Cailleux’ red is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented and aged in tank and bottled without fining with a light filtration. Just under 5,000 cases were produced in the 2016 vintage, and this one offers up classic notes of graphite, dark fruits, and spice. Eminently drinkable, it is a great value in small domaine Red Bordeaux.
3. 2015 Chateau Boutisse Saint-Emilion Grand Cru (Bordeaux, France) – This 24 hectare property is situated on the clay-limestone plateau which produces some of the top wines in of Saint-Emilion. Composed of 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the remainder in Cabernet Franc and Carmenere, the wine was aged for 15 months in French oak. “The 2015 Boutisse is terrific. Deep, dark and pliant, it exudes class from the very first taste. Black cherry, espresso, chocolate and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in this powerful, ample Saint-Émilion. The 2015 is extroverted and also very beautiful in every way.” – Vinous Media – 94 points
