Charlotte-based importer Eric Solomon has made a name for himself as one of the best importers in the business. And he’s especially good at finding great, highly rated wines at great prices. Focusing on wines from smaller, family owned and operated French and Spanish wineries, Eric’s roster of producers emphasize “place over process.” Stop by the store this Saturday for an expanded lineup of his highly rated, hard to resist wines. 1. 2018 Claude Riffault Sancerre ‘Les Boucauds’ (Loire Valley, France) – Loire Valley expert David Schildknecht called this dynamic operations “one of the five or six most exciting estates in the Sancerre appellation.” They young Stephane Riffault works with old vines in his certified organic and biodynamic vineyards. He ferments with native yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak, and he ages his wine on the lees for 8 months. The result is sensational Sancerre with gorgeous minerality and purity of fruit.
2. 2017 Novellum Chardonnay (Roussillon, France) – A joint venture between Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage, Novellum represents one of the great Chardonnay values on the planet. From 30+ year old, sustainably farmed vineyards just a stones throw from the Mediterranean, it “boasts sensational notes of ripe citrus, white flowers, and spice, with loads of classic Catalanes salinity and obvious minerality.” – Jeb Dunnuck – 92 points
3. 2017 Mas Donis Montsant Tinto ‘Old Vines’ (Montsant, Spain) – Always a candidate for red wine value of the year, the 2017 Mas Donis is no exception. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah from vineyards neighboring Priorat, this tastes like top-flight Priorat, but it costs half the price. Boasting gorgeous notes of ripe blue fruits, violets, pepper, and smoky mineral, it’s rich and very palate pleasing.
4. 2017 Chateau Pesquie Ventoux ‘Terrasses’ (Ventoux, France) – The premiere estate in the Ventoux has knocked it outta’ the park with their 2017’s. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah from certified organic vineyards, Jeb Dunnuck said it “ranks with the finest vintages I’ve tasted, matching the stunning 2010.” His tasting notes are nearly identical to mine: “The essence of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, and wildflowers flow to a full-bodied, plump, deep, beautifully layered and sexy wine that has medium to full body, ripe tannins, notable minerality, and a great finish.”
5. Surprise Wine – Like Priorat? We’ll end with a very special wine from the fabled, steep, slatey vineyards of Catalonia. Come early as we’ll only open 1 bottle of this one.
