1. 2011 Tilia Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza, Argentina) – Tilia is owned by the Catenas, Argentina’s first family of wine, and they are putting out some of the country’s top values. Their Cabernet is a wonderful rendition of the grape at a very attractive price. Medium bodied and zesty, it offers up notes of black currant, cherry and blueberry and a wonderful balance between tannin and ripe fruit.
2. 2011 Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles, California) – When Jim and Bob Varner aren’t making award winning Pinots and Chardonnays under their Varner label, they buy high quality fruit to make their Foxglove range of wines. Their Cabernet is a stellar value that shows true Paso Robles character – more lush, ripe and fruit driven with nice little side notes of earth and spice.
3. 2009 Cousino Macul Cabernet Sauvignon “Antiguas Reservas” (Maipo Valley, Chile) – Cousino Macul is one of Chile’s oldest family owned and operated wineries, and their “AR” Cab as it’s called is one of the iconic wines of the country. With a Bordeaux like nose of tobacco, mint and dark fruit, this is firmly rooted in the “Old World” model of wine. The palate is rich, yet crisp and vibrant, with black currant, cherry, floral and smoke notes. Even better, you can drink this one over the next 10+ years.
4. 2011 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon (Margaret River, Australia) – Australia’s Margaret River region in the far western part of the country has developed a great reputation for Bordeaux varietals. The cool, ocean-influenced climate is ideal for the cultivation of grapes, and Ringbolt is a great introduction to Margaret River Cab. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon gives a pure, intensely fruited nose of ripe black currant, black cherries and pencil shavings with touches of lightly grilled bread, dried mint and chocolate box.
5. 2010 Hendry Ranch “HRW” Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, California) – George Hendry is a quality fanatic and only makes about 1,400 cases of this, his “second” wine. It is classic Napa Cab, with gorgeous notes of warm cassis, spice box, cedar and graphite along with a beautifully balanced palate.
