Since 1871, the Garofoli winery has been passionately run by the same family. Five generations of the Garofolis have farmed the vineyards of Italy's Marche region, along the country's eastern, Adriatic coast. For hundreds of years, the Montepulciano grape has achieved greatness in the Rosso Conero DOC, in the warmer, southern part of the region. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better champion of the variety than the Garofoli family.
Today, in addition to being one of the largest land-owners in the region, their wines represent some of the finest values coming out of Central Italy. Their 2020 Piancarda is 100% Montepulciano from the family's best, oldest, and lowest-yielding vines. I tasted this with importer Mike Tiano of the Haw River Wine Man last week, and we were both completely awestruck with quality of this vintage.

2020 Garofoli Rosso Conero Piancarda -- Here's why you should buy it:

- The name Piancarda comes from Biancarda, which was the historical name of the area, referring to the white (bianca) limestone-rich soil. As many of you know, limestone-rich, rocky soils are responsible for some of the greatest wines in the world.
