Bodega Garzon Albarino 2021

World-Class Albarino.....from Urugauy!

If you thought top-notch Albarino could only be produced in Spain, think again. Bodega Garzon's outstanding Albarino has scored 90+ points every vintage back to 2017.

Fuller-bodied than most Albarinos from Spain, this white lights up the palate with gorgeous notes of ripe peach, honeysuckle, melon, and lemon curd flavors. It's a truly delicious white, and it's richer personality makes it a perfect winter white.

What a cool wine! This one has graced our shelves for a few years now, but I hadn't tried it in awhile. I brought a bottle home to pair with my wife's delicious and spicy fish curry, and it pretty much blew us both away. The fruit-forward character of the wine helped tame the spice while the wine's natural acidity helped cut through the richness of the dish. Don't ask me for the recipe.....Lynn is a very "instinctual chef."

When you understand the geography and climate of Uruguay, it makes sense that Albarino is a natural fit. Garzon's Albarino vineyards lie along the Atlantic coast, just like the Albarino vineyards of Rias Baixas in NW Spain. Combine that with rocky soils, cooling Atlantic breezes, and a state-of-the-art winery, and you have the makings of a world-class wine.

Trust me, you will start hearing more about Uruguayan wines, and Bodega Garzon is one of the country's qualitative leaders. This cutting-edge, modern, and sustainable winery was founded in the early 2000's by Argentinian businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni, and no expense was spared. Today, the estate is highly respected as evidenced by Wine Enthusiast naming them New World Winery of the Year in 2018.

If you're still not sold, check out Wine Spectator's recent review of this wine. "Minerally, with a crisp structure to the dried apple and gooseberry flavors. Floral accents midpalate, with a lightly spiced finish, offering green herbal accents. Drink now through 2024."

Try this out with your own fish curry or just pick up your favorite Thai takeout, and tell them to make it a little spicier than usual. It's also delicious with nothing more than a glass and another wine lover. Cheers!
