2013 McPrice Myers Right Hand Man
Pleasure-bent Syrah blend from hot new producer.
SOLD OUT
McPrice Myers started making wine in California’s Central Coast in 2002. In a very short period of time, founder and winemaker Mac Myers has established his winery as one of the rising stars of the region. I tasted Mac’s Right Hand Man recently, and I agree with that assessment 100%. I’m not going to beat around the bush on this one, this is easily one of the best under-$20 domestic Syrah’s I’ve ever tasted.
“Bright violet. Blueberry, cherry compote, dark chocolate and cracked pepper on the pungent, smoke-tinged nose. Smooth, palate-staining black and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors show excellent clarity and pick up a mineral element with air. The peppery note comes back strong on a very long, penetrating finish shaped by supple, even tannins. Drink now through 2025. $25 suggested retail.” – Antonio Galloni - Vinous Media
Fruit is sourced from the west side of Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County for this wine. Mac includes small bits (5% each) of Petite Sirah for color/pepper and Viognier for exotic aromatics. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 22 months in 10% new French and American oak. The resulting wine is a beauty! Deeply colored, almost opaque and exhibiting heady aromas and flavors of cassis, dark raspberry, dark cherry, smoky herb, bacon fat, and on and on. This could easily compete with $40 to $50 Syrahs from anywhere in the world.
