Solena Pinot Noir Grand Cuvee

2012 Solena Pinot Noir "Grand Cuvee"

After successful careers working for other Oregon wineries, Laurent and Danielle Andrus Montalieu founded their own estate winery in 2002. Laurent was the longtime winemaker at Oregon’s famed WillaKenzie Estate and Danielle sharpened her skills at her family’s Pine Ridge Winery before heading north to help start Archery Summit. Working together, the couple have established Solena as one of the rising star producers of Oregon.

Good Oregon Pinot Noir is all about balance and complexity, and the Montalieu’s 2012 Grand Cuvée is both of those things. Medium bodied and flowing with aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit with background notes of earthy spice and just a whiff of toasty oak. Smooth, supple, and harmonious in the mouth, it glides across the palate with seamless red fruit and spice, finishing with just a hint of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Like all of the best 2012 Oregon Pinot Noirs, this is fuller, richer, and more intense, but it’s still elegant and nuanced.

Wine Spectator: “Sleek, lithe and inviting, with juicy cherry, black cherry and gentle spice flavors that glide quickly over polished tannins into a long and vivid finish. This has presence, harmony, depth and persistence. Best from 2016 through 2022.”

You could easily slug this back with nothing more than a glass and a friend, but do yourself a favor and try it with grilled salmon, pork tenderloin, chicken, or even filet mignon. Like I said, supplies are limited so don’t delay. Happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
