Wine of the Week - 2009 A. Christmann Spatburgunder

Wine of the Week - 2009 A. Christmann Spatburgunder

SOLD OUT! A. Christmann is considered one of Germany’s finest producers of Spatburgunder, the unique German clone of Pinot Noir. The estate is very ably run by 7th generation vigneron Steffen Christmann.

The family uses organic methods in the vineyards combined with strict vineyard management and very low yields. In a good vintage, such as 2009, the family produces a whopping 800 cases of this wine, and if tasted blind, I would swear I was drinking really good Red Burgundy.

2009 A. Christmann Spatburgunder

German Pinot Noir that drinks like fine Red Burgundy!

SOLD OUT

The wine is fermented in stainless steel using native yeasts, and then is moved into a combination of new and old barrels and barriques for aging. I know many of you might be a bit “scared” of this wine, as you may have had bad luck with German Pinot Noirs in the past, but you have to trust me on this one. This is a world class wine from a top notch producer. In fact, it was named “Top Spatburgunder in Germany” by Wine and Spirits magazine.

Vintage 2009 was a warm one throughout Europe and Pfalz is all ready one of the warmer growing regions in Germany. The resulting wine is not light and transparent like many of the German Pinots I’ve had in the past. Instead, it offers up a lovely ruby color along with aromas of dark cherry, plum, herb and earth notes. On the palate, it is silky and complex with flavors of ripe cherry/black cherry, plum, herb, truffle and spice. Try it with a simple herb roasted chicken and root vegetables or lay it down for another 3 to 5 years.
