White Burgundy Value Alert - 2017 Olivier Leflaive Les Setilles

White Burgundy Value Alert - 2017 Olivier Leflaive Les Setilles

The 2017 Olivier Leflaive Les Setilles drinks like a hypothetical cross of Meursault and Puligny Montrachet, but it comes to you at a fraction of the price. Sound like I’m exaggerating on this one? I promise you I’m not!

There’s a reason it drinks like a wine from those esteemed villages — BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THE GRAPES FROM! And due to this unique blending of villages, it can only carry the broader Bourgogne designation. Whatever the case, this is rocking good White Burgundy from one of the master negociants of the region.

This wine takes me back to when I first moved to Asheville in 2003. I was working at wine store downtown, and this wine was my introduction to high-class White Burgundy. It’s just as good now as it was back then! And if you don’t believe me about the Meursault/Puligny connection click here to check out the tech notes from the importer’s website. A 50/50 blend of grapes from those two famed White Burgundy villages, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in a combination of Allier oak barrels (60%) and stainless steel (40%) before bottling.

The resulting wine is absolutely stunning. Like all great White Burgundy, there’s certainly richness here, but there’s laser-focused acidity providing lift and freshness. Aromas of hazelnut, white flowers, spiced apple, and citrus oils lead into a rich and round palate of pear, lemon, baking spice, roasted nut, and mineral. Close your eyes, smell it, then taste it, and you’ll swear you’re drinking Meursault or Puligny. Delicious by itself as an aperitif, this would be stunning with poultry, pork roast, or lavish seafood preparations.

I said it once and I’ll say it again, I bought my distributor out of this one. If you love elegant and complex Chardonnay, go ahead and get a 6-pack. You’ll thank me. Until we meet again, cheers to White Burgundy and to happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
