The Domaine Daulny Sancerre truly showcases why Sancerre is one of the best Sauvignon Blanc regions in the world. The new 2020 vintage is as good as any that I've ever tasted from Etienne Daulny, and Sancerre doesn't just taste good during the warmer months.
Another in a string of great Loire Valley vintages, 2020 produced Sauvignon Blancs with bright, refreshing, and classic personalities. Etienne Daulny is reporting a vintage marked by very high quality as well as good yields. Put simply, 2020 will go down as a great year marked by highly aromatic and flavor-packed Sauvignon Blancs.

Year in and year out, Domaine Daulny makes one of my favorite Sancerres. The estate contains 15 hectares of diverse plots from varying types of soil, including clay and flint and Portlandian and Kimmeridgian. I know it isn’t fun to talk about “dirt,” but these soil types, rich with limestone, are the ones that give Sancerre its noted minerality. In addition, Etienne includes old vine “stuff” from some of Sancerre’s top parcels, including plantings from Les Monts Damnés, Les Bois Butteux, and La Perriere.
As Sancerre has grown in popularity in the US and worldwide, prices have risen while quality has fallen. Many producers are just “calling it in,” bottling insipid, uninspiring Sauvignon Blanc that can still carry the Sancerre designation. I have enjoyed Daulny’s Sancerres for 20 years, and I can promise you that is not the case with this wine. Daulny's wines are better than ever!
After tasting the 2020 vintage of this wine, I bought as much as my distributor would allow. This is what Sancerre is supposed to taste like! Made from 50+ year old Sauvignon Blanc vines, fermented in stainless steel and aged on its fine lees, this captures the essence of the grape and the place. Ripe citrus and pear are front and center with fennel, grapefruit zest and saline mineral notes in the background. Concentrated and flavor-packed on the palate, the wine maintains wonderful balance and elegance.
The elegance and balance of Daulny's Sancerre make it a wine for all seasons and all sorts of dishes. I'm excited to crack a bottle to enjoy with my Thanksgiving dinner this year, and I recommend you do the same. It's also super tasty as an aperitif or served with a creamy and tangy goat cheese.
