I've been buying the heck out of 2022 Burgundies, as the vintage provided exceptional conditions for both whites and reds. In the words of British Master of Wine and Burgundy expert Jasper Morris, the vintage was both "bountiful and beautiful."
Proof positive of this statement are the wines from third generation, family-owned, and certified organic Domaine du Prieure. Based in the hamlet of Savigny-les-Beaune, in the far northern reaches of the Cote de Beaune, they have produced an utterly scrumptious Red Burgundy that represents one of the great values of this highly-acclaimed vintage.
2022 Domaine du Prieure Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Beaune
Classic, silky, and gorgeous Red Burgundy at a great price!
I'll start by saying that you will be blown away by the silky and balanced style of this wine. Unfortunately, they make just 700 cases, and we've got just 60 bottles up for grabs.
I have been a longtime fan of the wines from Domaine du Prieure. A major over-achiever, their wines represent some of the finest Burgundy values I taste every year. I’d be remiss not to mention that these wines come from Chloe Wines, the Seattle-based importer that also brings us Capitain-Gagnerot, another major-league over-achiever.
The estate’s 2022 Hautes-Cotes de Beaune comes from a single parcel of Pinot Noir planted in 1981. This southeast facing vineyard is located at the highest elevation deep in the village of Savigny les Beaune. These older, lower-yielding vines and the cooler nature of this organic site yielded a beautiful, complex, and perfectly balanced wine in the hot, sunny, and dry '22 vintage.
This is a wine that is characterized by perfect ripeness of fruit balanced by zesty acidity. With a nice mix of red and dark berries combined with more complex notes of damp earth, woodsy spice, and forest floor, this medium-bodied effort offers immediate gratification. That means drink it now, like tonight!
Finding tasty Red Burgundy at this price point is nearly impossible. Being that this is my favorite category of wine, I feel more than qualified in my assessment of this one. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Just 60 bottles available, and that's it for the vintage. It won't last long......
