If you haven't jumped on the Gruner Veltliner train yet, here's your chance, and Stadt Krems makes a classic version. An exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, it is Austria's most important grape variety.
With a history dating back to 1452, Stadt Krems is one of the oldest and most respected estates in Kremstal, in the northern reaches of Austria. Their 2020 Gruner Veltliner is bursting with energy and vitality, and for the fourth year in a row, it garnered a 90+ point score.

Founded in 1452, Stadt Krems was originally conceived to provide revenue to the hospital in Krems. Nearly 600 years later, Fritz Miesbauer and his young, ambitious team craft one of Austria's most consistently delicious Gruners. They farm their 75 acres of vines in a very clean fashion, and they ferment all of their wines in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity.
While this is certainly fresh and pure, it also possesses a rather full and flavor-packed palate, making it a wonderful, cooler weather white. A complex bouquet of orchard and citrus fruits, green herbs, spice and mineral leads into a zippy and zesty palate that finishes long and satisfying. This is textbook Gruner, and it will appeal to both seasoned "cork dorks" and to newer wine lovers.
Bottled with a screwcap, which I'm a huge fan of, this one lasts for days in the fridge after opening. I'm not sure why, but this one just doesn't fade as fast as most wines. One of the all-time great wines for hard-to-pair foods like asparagus, artichokes, and other green veggies, it's also a great glass of wine to have after a hard day's work. You deserve it!
